History of Ćmielowski Porcelain Works

The porcelain factory in Ćmielowskie, which still produces porcelain, belongs to the oldest group of ceramic factories in Poland. The beginnings date back to 1790. This date should be considered conventional, when the local potter Wojtas brought together several colleagues who had worked individually so far. A primitive workshop was created at which the division of activities was carried out. It should be added that next to typical clay pots – which was done in these pages for centuries faience was produced. The plant was fully commissioned in 1804, when the factory was officially notified. Its first owner and initiator was Hyacynt (Jacek), count. Małachowski (1804-1830). He employed professionals from outside Poland in managerial positions, but the basic crew was recruited from the local population. After the death of Jacek Małachowski (1821), his daughter became the heir of the factory. The plants were still managed by experienced specialist Adolf Fryderyk Watke, achieving considerable successes in this field. At that time, Ćmielów’s workshop already had a regulated position on the ceramic market, not only domestic but also European.
